From a recital given in Vevy, Switzerland on December 31,1954 and recorded by RTS – Violinist Peter Rybar and pianist Clara Haskil in a performance of Sonata Number 2 – op. 36a for Violin and Piano by Feruccio Busoni.
Feruccio Busoni began composing in his early years in a late romantic style, but after 1907, when he published his Sketch of a New Esthetic of Music, he developed a more individual style, often with elements of atonality. His visits to America led to interest in North American indigenous tribal melodies which were reflected in some of his works. His compositions include works for piano, among them a monumental Piano Concerto, and transcriptions of the works of others, notably Johann Sebastian Bach (published as the Bach-Busoni Editions). He also wrote chamber music, vocal and orchestral works, and operas—one of which, Doktor Faust, he left unfinished when he died, in Berlin, at the age of 58.
Peter Rybar was a Czech-Swiss violinist. Most of Rybar’s recordings were produced by Concert Hall, Westminster and Le Chant du Monde, especially Robert Schumann’s Violin Concerto (with the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne directed by Victor Desarzens) and other works by Schumann for violin and piano (with Hélène Boschi). Peter Rybar taught first at the Conservatory of Winterthur and then at the Conservatoire de Genève.
Clara Haskil was a Romanian classical pianist, renowned as an interpreter of the classical and early romantic repertoire. She was particularly noted for her performances and recordings of Mozart. She was also a noted interpreter of Beethoven, Schumann, and Scarlatti.
